What Is Bipolar Disorder? Signs, Symptoms & Support for Adults

At Brookside Farm, we care for individuals with a wide range of mental health diagnoses, including bipolar disorder. For families, caregivers, and loved ones, understanding bipolar disorder is an important step toward providing the right support and compassion. In this blog post, we’ll explore what bipolar disorder is, the common signs and symptoms, and how adults living with it can lead fulfilling lives with the right care.

What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These shifts can affect a person’s energy levels, behavior, ability to think clearly, and capacity to function in daily life.

There are several types of bipolar disorder, including:

Bipolar I Disorder: Defined by manic episodes that last at least 7 days, or by manic symptoms so severe that hospitalization is required. Depressive episodes typically occur as well.

Bipolar II Disorder: Involves patterns of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes, but not the full-blown manic episodes seen in Bipolar I.

Cyclothymic Disorder (Cyclothymia): Periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms lasting at least 2 years (1 year in children and adolescents) that don’t meet the full criteria for a bipolar diagnosis.

Common Signs and Symptoms Manic or Hypomanic Episodes May Include:

Increased energy or activity

Decreased need for sleep

Racing thoughts or rapid speech

Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity

Risky behavior (e.g., overspending, reckless driving)

Depressive Episodes May Include:

Low energy and fatigue Sadness or hopelessness

Difficulty concentrating

Changes in appetite or sleep

Thoughts of death or suicide

Everyone’s experience with bipolar disorder is different. Some individuals may cycle quickly between moods, while others may have long periods of stability.
